Cyrus Buffum is an environmental advocate, writer, and community developer. He was born and raised on Cape Cod and studied physics and mathematics in college.

Cyrus is the founder of Charleston Waterkeeper and the co-founder of Friends of Gadsden Creek. His work has been published in Wildsam Field Guides (including this one on New England and this one on Cape Cod), several alt-weekly newspapers (like this letter to the editor about genetically engineered oysters and why they’re bad), Huffington Post, and Esquire (detailing his work as a commercial oysterman).

Cyrus’s work exists at the intersection of place and culture.

His work has recently been featured in the Provincetown Independent (April 2026) and College of Charleston Magazine (Winter 2026).
